Procurement vs. Acquisition — What's the Difference?

"Procurement" and "Acquisition" are terms that, in a business context, refer to processes involving the securing or obtaining of assets. However, they are not entirely synonymous. Procurement often refers specifically to the steps and processes involved in obtaining goods, services, or works, usually after a certain need arises in an organization. At a foundational level, Procurement can be seen as a subset of Acquisition. While Procurement typically emphasizes the transactional process of buying or obtaining goods and services, Acquisition can span a broader range of activities. For example, in the corporate world, an acquisition could refer to one company buying another, a concept not covered by the term Procurement.

Additionally, the nuances between Procurement and Acquisition also manifest in their use in different sectors. In the realm of defense and government, Acquisition often includes a broader lifecycle of items: from research, development, testing, production, logistics, to disposal. In contrast, Procurement in the same sectors might narrowly focus on the phase where goods or services are bought.

Lastly, in everyday language, while both terms can technically apply to any act of obtaining or procuring, Acquisition often carries more weight, implying larger or more significant procurements. A person might use Procurement when discussing the process of selecting a vendor for office supplies but use Acquisition to describe the process of gaining a new piece of real estate or significant asset.
