Equid vs. Equine — What's the Difference?

Equids represent a family of mammals scientifically known as Equidae, which encompasses horses, donkeys, zebras, and other related animals. These species share common characteristics such as a single toe encased in a hoof, long legs, and herbivorous diets. On the other hand, equine is an adjective used to describe anything related to horses. While all horses are equids, not all equids are considered equine, as the term equine excludes donkeys, zebras, and other non-horse members of the Equidae family.

The term "equid" is used in a broader zoological context to refer to the entire family that includes several genera and species, highlighting evolutionary aspects, genetic relationships, and a wide range of behaviors and habitats. This includes everything from nutritional needs specific to horses, to preventive medicine, to sports medicine related to horse racing, dressage, and other equine sports. Equid care and management, while including aspects relevant to all family members, might address broader topics applicable to donkeys and zebras, considering their unique needs and environments.

The use of equids and equine in culture and history also shows significant differences. Equids have been integral to human development for millennia, with donkeys and horses both serving as beasts of burden, modes of transportation, and in warfare. The historical and cultural significance of equids encompasses a broad spectrum of human-equine relationships, including the role of zebras in African cultures. Equine history and culture, by contrast, tend to focus more narrowly on the relationship between humans and horses, including the development of horseback riding, the cultural significance of horse sports, and the role of horses in historical events and exploration.
