Refund vs. Rebate — What's the Difference?

A refund is the act of returning money to a customer, typically because the product or service was unsatisfactory, defective, or not delivered. A customer may receive a refund after returning a product, cancelling a service, or when an item purchased is found to be unavailable. Refunds are a way for businesses to maintain customer satisfaction and trust. In contrast, a rebate is a discount or reduction in price given back to the customer after the purchase has been made. Rebates often require the customer to submit proof of purchase and are used as a marketing strategy to encourage sales.

Refunds are generally straightforward and provide the customer with the exact amount paid for the returned item or service. They are often processed by the retailer or service provider from whom the purchase was originally made. Rebates, however, can be offered by either the retailer or the manufacturer and may come in the form of a check, direct deposit, or even a gift card. The rebate amount is predetermined and is usually a portion of the purchase price, rather than the full cost.

The process of getting a refund usually involves returning the product or disputing the charge with the seller or credit card company, which can be immediate or take a few days to process. Rebates require the customer to fill out forms, provide proof of purchase, and mail in the necessary information, which can take several weeks or months to process.
