Persist vs. Remain — What's the Difference?

Persist involves continuing an action or state despite difficulty or opposition, highlighting determination or endurance. For instance, an idea might persist in someone's mind, suggesting it remains despite attempts to forget or ignore it. This term often carries a connotation of effort or active resistance against something that might cause change. Whereas remain refers to staying in the same place, condition, or state, typically without the same emphasis on struggle or opposition. It can imply stability or consistency over time. A building, for example, remains in its location, indicating it hasn't moved, but without suggesting any effort to stay put.

Persist suggests an active process, often against challenges. It is commonly used to describe situations where there is a conscious effort to continue or maintain something, such as beliefs, efforts, or activities, despite difficulties or opposition. This term implies a dynamic scenario where forces or obstacles might prevent continuation, yet the action or state continues.
