Patriarchy vs. Feminism — What's the Difference?

Patriarchy is a social system in which males predominantly hold power in roles of leadership, moral authority, and control of property. The principle of patriarchy is based on the belief that men are superior or should have more rights and privileges. On the flip side, Feminism is a socio-political and cultural movement that seeks to challenge and rectify the injustices that women face due to their gender. It advocates for the equal rights and opportunities of women in all spheres of life.

Historically, Patriarchy has been the prevailing model in many cultures around the world. It often manifests in traditions, laws, and societal norms that privilege men over women. For instance, in some patriarchal societies, women might be denied the right to vote, work, or receive an education. Conversely, Feminism emerged as a counter-response to these patriarchal norms. Feminists have fought for women's suffrage, equal pay, reproductive rights, and an end to gender-based discrimination.

While Patriarchy often hinges on fixed gender roles, expecting men to be providers and decision-makers and women to be caregivers or homemakers, Feminism opposes such stringent roles. Feminists argue that individuals should have the freedom to choose their roles and paths without being confined by gender stereotypes.
