A phylarch (Greek: φύλαρχος, Latin: phylarchus) is a Greek title meaning "ruler of a tribe", from phyle, "tribe" + archein "to rule". In Classical Athens, a phylarch was the elected commander of the cavalry provided by each of the city's ten tribes.
